Johnny McGill

Johnny McGill was a fiddler in Girvan in Ayrshire who was born about 1707. He was a prolific composer and one of his best known tunes was the jig called “Johnny McGill”. It was to this tune that Robert Burns wrote “Sweet Tibbie Dunbar” and Hector MacNeill (1746–1818) set “Come Under My Plaidy”. Both songs are included in James Johnson’s The Scots Musical Museum.
