The Bottom of the Punchbowl

Robert Burns used many of the tunes of dancing-master, composer and collector James Oswald (1711–1769) as the bases for his songs. In 1791 Burns wrote to James Johnson: “I was so lucky lately as to pick up an entire copy of Oswald’s Scots music and I think I shall make glorious work out of it.”

To the tune, “The Bottom of the Punchbowl” from Oswald’s First Collection, Burns wrote:

I had sax owsen in a pleugh,
And they drew a’ well enough;
I sell’d them a’ just ane by ane,
Gude ale keeps my heart aboon!
Chorus
O, gude ale comes, and gude ale goes,
Gude ale gars me sell my hose,
Sell my hose and pawn my shoon,
Gude ale keeps my heart aboon!

Gude ale hauds me bare and busy,
Gars me moop wi’ the servant hizzie,
Stand i’ the stool when I hae done,
Gude ale keeps my heart aboon!
