The dance is named for the tune of the same name which John Drewry referred to as a Gaelic song with a very catchy tune. This tune was, and is, used by many bands in various reel sets, in addition to being the lead tune for this dance.

The Gaelic name translates loosely as White Banner and is usually taken to refer to the Fairy Flag of Dunvegan kept at Dunvegan Castle, the seat of Clan Macleod on the Isle of Skye. The flag is the subject of numerous legends.
