It was not easy for Miss Jean C. Milligan of Glasgow, as a SCD teacher, to define steps. She was met with howls of protest. Everyone was sure that his or her way was the only right and proper way and wouldn’t change. When she reintroduced the Poussette she provoked immediate criticism. A dancer of note voiced the feelings of the men, “Na, na, yer Grace, I dinna like this twa-handed Poussette. We’ve aye dune it gruppit.” He had a point there but had to yield to Miss Milligan when she showed them the authority of an old MSS of 1790, which described it in detail. She was also accused of inventing new steps when she reintroduced the Skip Change of Step. She rigidly adhered to this discipline with the tenacity of a Border Terrier, they say. “Try to interfere in a meeting that she is chairing and see how far you get,” was the word. These, of course, are necessary ingredients of genius.
