The tune first appears in the Leyden Manuscript (c. 1690) and subsequently appeared in Orpheus Caledonius (1725) and other manuscripts. It was frequently printed in 19th century Scottish songsters. Under the title "Jock the Laird's Brother" the tune was printed in the Blaikie Manuscript (1692).
