CATRIONA'S BIRTHDAY WALTZ. Shetland, Waltz. D Major. Standard. AAB. Composed by the late Shetland fiddler, collector, teacher and composer Tom Anderson (1981). Anderson (Ringing Strings), 1983; pg. 31.
FAREWELL TO TCHERNOBYL. French, Reel. E Minor. Standard. AA'BC. A modern composition by Michel Ferry of Gif-sur-Yvette, France, who said "I composed this tune in 1986, the year of the nuclear catastrophe in Tchernobyl (Ukraine). I chose the title to remember the distress and the suffering of the local population. Hopefully, this tune would be a modest warning against nuclear energy and arms everywhere in the world" (Songer}. Recorded by New England fiddler Kerry Elkin on "Soir et Matin" (as untitled D minor reel) and by Catriona MacDonald on "Opus Blue." Songer (Portland Collection), 1997; pg. 77. Jigsaw - "Cut Up the Floor."
TAM LIN REEL. AKA - "Tamlyn." AKA and see "The Glasgow Reel," "The Howling Wind." Irish, Reel. D Minor (Black): A Minor (Taylor). Standard. AABB. The tune has been set in D Minor, E Minor and A Minor (for flute). Paddy O'Brien played it in D Minor. Composition credited to Dublin musician Davey Arthur, according to notes on Steeleye Span's CD "Time" (Shanachie 79099), formerly of the group The Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur, though he now performs on his own. Rumor has it that it was later renamed as "The Howling Wind" by Paddy O'Brien because he liked the tune, but not the name (which apparently derives from the famous Child ballad about fair Janet and her lover, enchanted by elves). Black (Music's the Very Best Thing), 1996; No. 149, pg. 78. Taylor (Where's the Crack), 1989; pg. 6 (appears as "Tamlyn"). Green Linnet SIF 1102, Phil Cunningham - "Palomino Waltz." Donnell Leahy - "Leahy." Catriona McDonald and Ian Lowthian - "Opus Blue."
