"The Pretty Girls of the Village," "The Siege of Ennis," "You're right my love." Irish, Reel. E Minor. Standard. AB. Breathnach finds the 'B' part of "Fisherman's Lilt" to be the same as that of "Old John's Jig" (Port Shean tSeáin), and thinks the reel was derived from the jig. The 'A' part of "Fisherman's Lilt" is similar to the 'B' part of "Lady Mary Lindsay" printed by Glen, who reprinted it from John Riddle's collection of 1766. The "Funny Eye" title is from a music broadsheet published by Hime in Dublin about 1810, whle "The Pretty Girls of the Village" title comes from O'Brien's Irish Folk Dance Music (178). Sources for notated versions: fiddler George Rowley/Seoirse Ó Roghallaigh (Ireland) [Breathnach]; piper Willie Clancy (1918-1973, Miltown Malbay, West Clare) [Mitchell].. Breathnach (CRE I), 1963; No. 126, pg. 51. Mitchell (Dance Music of Willie Clancy), 1993; No. 10, pg. 34. Shanachie 97011, Dan Ar Bras - "Irish Reels, Jigs, Airs and Hornpipes" (1990).

PRETTY GIRLS OF THE VILLAGE, THE [1]. AKA and see "Cunningham's Fancy," 'Funny Eye," "Lady Mary Lindsay," "Molly, what ails you?" "Phort Shean tSeain," "The Siege of Ennis," "Streacan an Iascaire," "You're right my Love." Irish, Reel.

SEIGE OF ENNIS, THE [1] ("Ionsai na Hinse" or "Suide na h-Inse"). Irish, Polka (Set or Long Dance). Ireland, West Kerry. G Major. Standard. AABBCD (Roche): AABBCCDD (Mac Amhlaoibh & Durham). Standard. The tune is used for a group dance. See also note for "Lark in the Morning." Mac Accordion player Joe Burke (b. 1939), originally from Coorhoor, above Loughrea in County Galway, remembers playing with the Leitrim (parish) Céilí Band for set dancers in the 1950's at Irish dance venues in London, and was impressed by the "thousands of people" who danced the sets and old-time waltzes at the halls. Later he played gigs in New York, Chicago and Boston, playing on a circuit for Bill Fuller's dance halls along with piano player Felix Dolan and fiddler Paddy Killoran. They dressed formally and had a fifteen minute spot between the Fintan Ward Band's sets, giving them time to play "The Seige of Ennis," "Stack of Barley" and an old-time waltz (Vallely & Piggott, Blooming Meadows, 1998). It should be noted that the Seige of Ennis is the name of a céilí dance, and that any group of three reels (or less frequently polkas) will suffice for the dance. Amhlaoibh & Durham (An Pota Stóir/The Set Dance Music of West Kerry), No. 37, pg. 27. Roche Collection, 1982, Vol. 3; No. 139, pg. 43.
