The melody appears earliest in the English publications Johnson's 200 Country Dances (1751) and Rutherford's 200 Country Dances (1756), page 25. The Gillespie Manuscript of Perth, 1768, gives a Scottish version, while in America it appears in the Walpole, New Hampshire, A Collection of Contra Dances, 1799.
