DOVER PIER. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard. AABB. The tune dates to 1791. The name Dover is derived from one of the many words for water of the Celtic Britons (before the time of the Romans who called the same place Dubris). Julius Caesar landed at Dover in 55 BC. William the conqueror hastened to finish fortifying the castle just after the battle of Hastings in 1066 to consolidate his victory, thought the castle that exists today was build by Henry II in the 1180's. Dover Castle became noted for its royal meetings and romances. Barnes (English Country Dance Tunes), 1986. Front Hall 03, Dudley Laufman--"Swinging on a Gate."

DUSTY BOB'S (JIG). AKA and see "Jack's Alive." American, Jig. G Major. Standard. AABB'. As "Jack's Alive" the title was first published by Playford. The first strain is a variant of "The Kesh Jig." Philippe Varlet discovered the tune on a 78 RPM recorded in 1938 by Irish accordion player Terry Lane as part of a medley called simply "Quadrilles." The same tune appears in the Fleishmann index of traditional Irish music as "The Miser," from Kane O'Hara's comic opera Midas, London, 1764. Cole (1001 Fiddle Tunes), 1940; pg. 72. Sannella, Balance and Swing. Sweet (Fifer's Delight), 1964/1981; pg. 29. Front Hall Records FHR-03, Dudley Laufman--"Swinging on a Gate."

PETRONELLA. AKA - "Patronella." New England, Canadian, Scottish, English; Reel, Scottish Measure and Country Dance Tune. D Major (Brody, Kennedy, Kerr, Lerwick, Messer, Miller & Perron, Raven, Sweet): G Major (Linscott): F Major (Athole, Emmerson, Gow, Hunter). Standard. AABB. The tune is Scottish in origin, published in Gow's Repository, Part Fourth, 1817. The RSCDS Scottish Country Dance Book (Book
1) also says the tune comes from Nathaniel Gow's Repository, although gives the date of publication as 1820. The accompanying dance is said (in The Ballroom, 1827) to have been introduced by Gow at his Annual Ball, in Edinburgh, that same year. It is linked with a country dance of the same name in Scotland and New England. The dance Petronella seems to have enjoyed remarkable popularity throughout the last three quarters of a century in Scotland, write Flett & Flett (1964), where "it appeas in every ballroom guide published in Scotland from 1823 to 1914, and it was also included in the repertoire of all the dancing-teachers whom we know to have have practised in Scotland within living memory." Likewise it has proved a staple at New England contra dances over the last century. For example, it was danced in August, 1914, as part of a cotillion for the 150th anniversary celebration of the town of Lancaster, New Hampshire, according to a playbill of the period. The tune is similar to "Tink a Tink," an English country dance air of the 18th century. Under a different title the melody is played in County Donegal, Ireland.
