DUCHESS OF BUCCLEUCH'S MINUET. AKA and see "Miss Jeanie Maxwell's Minuet." Scottish, Minuet. The alternate name is the original, and was changed to the Duchess title when Ms.Maxwell married. As Johnson (1983) points out, a frequently played melody was a gentle way to help keep a dedicatee in the public eye, and the name change would communicate her change in status to society.

MISS JEANIE MAXWELL'S MINUET. AKA and see "The Duchess of Buccleuch's Minuet." Scottish, Minuet. Composed c. 1766 by the gentleman fiddler and composer Thomas Erskine, the Earl of Kelly. Later Ms. Maxwell married and Kelly changed the name of the tune to "The Duchess of Buccleuch's Minuet". Such name changes informed the public of the matches young women made, while a popular tune helped keep their names in the public eye.
