The alternate title "Cameron's Gathering" comes from Gesto. KING'S REEL, THE. Scottish (originally), Canadian; Reel. Canada; Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island. A Dorian (Skye): A Mixolydian (Dunlay & Reich, Dunlay & Greenberg/MacLean, Little): A Mixolydian/Dorian (Dunlay & Greenberg/MacMaster): A Minor {'A' part} & A Mixolydian {'B' part} (Kerr, Athole). Standard. AAB (Little, Skye): AABB' (Kerr, Athole): AA'BB' (Perlman): AABCCD (Dunlay). Dunlay and Reich remark that this is a favorite among audiences in Cape Breton; "loud whoops of excitement are often heard at dances when the fiddler changes into this tune during a medley." The melody is frequently played in Nova Scotia in a medley following "King George the IVth" strathspey and with "The Old King's Reel," especially for stepdancing note Dunlay and Greenberg (1996). It was set for bagpipes by Barry Shears in his Gathering of the Clans Collection (1986). The tonality in the 'A' part of all versions shifts between Mixolydian and Dorian. Perlman (1996) states the third part (or B' in Perlman's book) is a Cape Breton addition. MACGREGOR'S GATHERING (Cruuinneach nan Griogarach). Scottish, Pipe Pibroch. The tune was copied by Alexander Campbell in 1815 for his book Albyn's Anthology from Captain Neil McLeod of Gesto's manuscript collection of pibrochs, as performed by the famous piping dynasty of the MacCrimmons of Skye. Clan Gregor claims descent from Grigar, third son of Kenneth MacAlpin, first king of Scotland. Glenorchy was the clan's original seat but as they prospered lands in Glengyle, Glen Lyon, Glen Straye and Balquidder came under their control. The clan's prospects waned in response to increasing power of the Campbells, however, resulting in their retreat into the Balquidder area, and at one point they became known as "The landless clan."
