Issue 1113: video shows incorrect stepping up

Object
St Andrew's Fair (Dance)
Submitter
Ann Murray (Pilatesdancer)
Assigned to
Eric Ferguson
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

Correct cribs and Original Instructions: 2s step up on 3 + 4;

  • the video is INCORRECT with 2s & 3s stepping up, then 3s down, as in Gang the Same Gate. This dance is DIFFERENT from Gang the same Gate. This leads to confusion when teaching. I send out links to Strathspey server. Some dancers think that the same applies as for Gang the Same Gate. Thanks. Ann

There is a note attached to the first video (the RSCDS video with preceding step and dance instruction) warning that music is one bar late, and the stepping up and down of 3rd couple is wrong. In the second video, of sets in a hall, the stepping up is correct. I do not see what more SCDDB should do. It would be a good thing if the RSCDS were to replace this poor video by a correct one. Ignored. Eric

I don’t think this video is properly thought of as an “RSCDS video” as it seems to have been produced under the auspices of the NHS (although with participation from the RSCDS – Angela Young is obviously teaching). The RSCDS is probably not in a position to get this video replaced, but I’ll ask.

Anyway, having said that, that video basically sucks. I’ve blocked it from display because of the dance/music mismatch and the misleading step up/down. If people want to see how the dance is done then the DancieMaetion video is a reasonable alternative, and the “reasonable quality” video isn’t that bad, either. I don’t believe it is asking too much that if people (or for that matter health insurance bodies) want their videos added to the database then the music should at least match up to the steps. I wonder whether there isn’t a Newcastle Festival video of this dance somewhere out there? We do St Andrew’s Fair in demonstrations all the time.
