Description

Corrections and extra information for the publication “Dances for Avril and David Quarrie” (which I just adopted).

The title, publisher and date are correct.

Technically it is (or was) available on paper as I have a paper copy in front of me, but I suspect its no longer available after all printed copies were distributed, so perhaps this can be left as “no”. I leave that to the editors judgement.

All but one of the dances in the book have actually been added to the database and all their dance entries correctly point to the publication with the correct order number. However the DB entry for the publication does not list any of the dances. Can that be fixed?

Anyway, here is the list of dances in their order in the book with comments on each one:

#1: Avril’s Frolic (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/dance/16955/)

Correction! This was devised by Luke Bradley (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/11151/) not Luke Brady. Otherwise the basic information is correct.

Additional information:

  • steps: pas-de-basque, skip-change
  • formations: petronella turn, reel of four (RSh), poussette

#2: A Deliberate Mistake (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/dance/16956/)

Basic information correct. Additionally:

  • steps: pas-de-basque, skip-change
  • formations: inverted double triangles, hands round 5

#3: Bye-bye Bluebelle ()

Basic information correct. Additionally:

  • steps: strathspey setting, strathspey travel
  • formations: RHA (3), half R&L, hands round 6

#4: A Dance to Say Thank You

All correct and complete.

#5: Let’s Ask Avril

Title: in the book this has “Ask” not “ask”.

Most basic information is correct, but the progression is actually 312. (Odds but works in a 4C set). Additional information:

  • steps: strathspey setting, strathspey travel
  • formations: includes something called “push me pull you reels” where 1st couple dance the path of a reel of 3 but the corners dance back to back RSh, then back to back LSh. It was not invented by the devisor but I couldnt see anything like that listed in the formations available in the complex dance search page. Im not sure if it makes sense to add this or not.

#6: Quarries’ Procession

Correct and pretty complete, but could add:

  • formations: half LHA, balance in line, half prom reel of 3, LHA (3), half RHA

#7: The Mentors

Missed out of the original database entry for the book, so please add this. The details are:

Devised by Florence Burgy (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/11236/) Strathspey, 80 bars, 4 couples, square set (once through) Steps: strathspey setting, strathspey travel Formations: bourrel (2 cpl), reel of four, reel of four intersecting, hands round 8 Recommended music: The Robertson Rant

Tunes:

There are no tunes (sheet music) published in the booklet. I know Luke Bradley composed a tune for “Avril’s Frolic” but as far as I know its not published (nor if it has the same title as the dance). Also Muriel Johnstone composed both a reel and strathspey tune for “A Dance to Say Thank You” but again I do not know anything about whether or where they are published nor their titles. If I manage to find out I will let you know.

Keith Rose kindly made diagrams for all seven dances. At the time he refrained from uploading them all to the database (except for two on request) in case they distracted from the booklet. But Im sure its now long enough after the booklet was originally published that they could all be uploaded.

With the above corrections and extra information, I think the TLC level could be 3. A couple of dances have some unusual figures so the formations are not really complete. I just listed those that are known and easily described.

Cheers, Murrough.

I have added those and a bit more.

I have written a mail to Murrough because comments were to tedious in the issue interface.

Thanks for adopting and letting us know, Heiko

After checks and direct email contact with Murrough, it turned out that “Let’s Ask Avril!” is now the third dance to feature “Pushme-Pullyou Reel” (after “Back to Back” and “Still Together” by Terry Glasspool).

Thus, I have added the Formation “Pushme-Pullyou Reel” to SCDDB.

Thanks to Murrough for pointing also this one out, Heiko
