Description

This dance is a strathspey, not a reel as listed in the database and on the tracks of the CD “A Birl Roond Forfar”. I do not have a copy of the original instructions, but the Minicrib notes that the dance contains HC setting (Highland Schottische) which is in strathspey time. It also lists the dance as a 64 bar reel. This may go back to Napier’s Index, which lists the dance as a hornpipe. The listing of the CD on the database also lists it as a Reel, but the music is definitely a strathspey. I have a copy of the original CD and have checked web sites selling the CD.

SCDDB lists a publication “Ian Powrie’s Farewell to Scotland” by Hugh Foss.

That publication lists only one dance, "Ian Powrie’s Farewell to Scotland, a Reel, by Margaret P A Thomson, and just one tune of the same name, by Jimmy Blue.

The entry for that tune states that it is used for two dances, the second one being a Strathspey “The Isle of May” by Lily Davison.

The Minicrib indeed lists the dance as a Reel, but the crib has HS setting.

I have set the progression of the dance to “once only”.

I am assigning this issue to Heiko, as he added this dance to the database last July.

Could someone please send us the original instructions? According to a list he sent me, MalcolmBrown has a copy

Hi Eric,

I did not enter “Ian Powrie’s Farewell To Scotland” last year, but just updated some information just as you did.

The dance is already in SCDDB for a long time (ID 3058 out of 17907 dances).

Neither do I have the recording.

The leaflet description does actually not state what type of dance it is. However, I take the presence of the Highland Schottische Setting is proof enough for me to update the dance’s type.

Then I will reassign the issue to Meinhard, since he has actually added (or just changed) the CD “Birl Roond Forfar” last November.

@Meinhard: do you have access to the CD information to check and update the type of the recording?

Cheers, Heiko
