Description

William Marshall is unlikely to be the composer of this tune. The earliest (and only pre-Kerr) version that I have been able to find is in a collection of music by John Bowie of Perth dating from about 1789. Bowie does not name any composer. The tune does not appear in any of Marshall’s collections and the title also seems an unlikely one for Marshall to have used given that The Gask was well outside his normal sphere of operation. I suspect that this one may be by the ubiquitous “Trad”.

Bowie’s collection is available to view on the National Library of Scotland’s website (Music deparment printed collections). The relevant page appears in the “Images” tab if you do a Google search using the tune’s title.

Thank you very much. I set the composer to “trad.”
