The English translation of the Gaelic is as I always understood the meaning to be, but the first word should therefore be buaile (cattle fold - or indeed sheep fold, which beasts might be more suited to the terrain :) ), not baile (township)

Hello, Since I know no gaelic I made a quick check of various sources on the web (eg wikipedia, scottish-places.info, etc) which seem unamimously to repeat “baile” rather than “buaile” as the word that got corrupted. Quite possibly of course they just propagate a misconception from one site to the next.
Is this your personal expert opinion or is it also supported by others? We could anyway add your suggestion as an alternative to whats currently in the Extra Info. Cheers, Murrough.

There are websites that support the “buaile” spelling, e.g. https://louisstott.wordpress.com/tag/wiliam-wordsworth/ … it might easily be that the wrong word baile is copied over from one source to the next, especially given that Wikipedia calls it “baile”.
