Description

There is an attribution error for the jig tune The Legacy for the dance of the same name in SCDDB which may have originated in the publication itself (which I don’t have to verify). The tune is attributed to Gordon Pattullo but as the tune entry notes, this jig predates Gordon Pattullo and is in Kerr’s Merry Melodies. Gordon Pattullo did compose a REEL called The Legacy, which appears in his tunebook The Furrow’s End (1996) and is not associated with this dance; it appears the 2 sources were conflated.

Thanks for reporting this. This seems to be quite a mess.

What I find is that there are TWO different dances called The Legacy, both jigs. One (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/dance/3770/) by Iain Goddard is in the Pinewoods book. The other (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/dance/3769/) has unknown deviser and is in the Border Dance Book.

I have added a new tune entry for the jig The Legacy (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/13969/). I have assigned it as the tune for both of those dances replacing the Pattullo reel tune.

I also reassigned that jig tune as the one published in both the Kerr and Border books. While making searches I found http://www.nigelgatherer.com/books/kerr/kmm.html has lists of tunes in the various Kerr publications.

The remaining issue which I have not yet tackled (no time this evening) is that there are many recordings which currently all “use” the Pattullo tune (see http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/972/#recordings). Most of them are in fact reels so I presume those are really using the Pattullo reel tune. But two are jigs so probably those are using the older jig tune.

It would be useful if someone could check this…

Meanwhile I also added a publication entry for Pattullo’s The Furrows End (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/publication/1484/). NB the title seems not to have an apostrophe (there are what I guess are unofficial scans of this book at https://shelialee.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/the-furrows-end-collection-for-accordion-fiddle.pdf). I added only those Pattullo tunes the database already knows about which is about half of those in the book.

Based on a detailed response fom Steve Wyrick (see below) I have now updated the two jig recordings which claimed to use the Pattullo reel tune:
The Legacy (by Tullochgorum) https://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/8406/
The Haymakers (by The Occasionals) https://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/2697/

I also added extra information about the traditional tune and the alias for it.

Steve’s email was:

I can verify that the Tullochgorum recording for The Legacy on the Shining Lights CD uses the traditional jig tune, and in the notes Barbara McOwen writes

‘There are 2 dances with this fitting name, both using the same title tune, The Legacy, commonly known among fiddlers as “How Can We Abstain From Whisky?” One of the dances, by local dancer Iain Goddard, is published in Pinewoods Book 2. The other is published in the Border Book.’

I would tend to trust this since Barbara’s a thorough researcher.

For what it’s worth, the tune was published as “How Can We Abstain From Whisky” in the Captain Simon Fraser Collection (The Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and the Isles, 1817) but appears as “The Legacy” in several later collections (among them Kerr’s, Ryan’s Mammoth Collection, Howe’s)

I clicked around and see this entry: http://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/8406/ for the Tullochgorum recording still lists the Gordon Pattullo Tune rather than the trad jig. Didn’t find anything further. I don’t have any of the recordings containing the reels so can’t help you there. Would feel fairly confident in assigning the trad tune to both jigs and any recordings that cite it in a jig set.
