Hi all, Kirk’s Hornpipe is a “Hornpipe”, not a “Reel”. Keith changed his diagram accordingly. We came across it when editing Whetherly book 2.
Thanks! Viktor

As far as the database is concerned, “vanity hornpipes” that from a dancer’s (as opposed to musician’s) POV are indistinguishable from reels, are listed as reels in order to avoid confusion. (When classifying dances, we don’t distinguish between jigs danced to jig tunes and jigs danced to two-steps, or strathspeys danced to strathspey tunes and strathspeys danced to slow airs, so why would we do it for reels danced to reel tunes vs. reels danced to hornpipe tunes?)
In the database, a “hornpipe” is a dance to Irish-style hornpipe music, which is slower than a reel and more “dotted”. Rob Sargent has some dances that work that way (with music recorded by Colin Dewar), although they’re not exactly taking the SCD world by storm.
