Description

Hi Anselm,

The two editions prior to what are already in the database (I have physical copies of these):

• Scottish Country Dances in Diagrams, Fourth Edition, by F.L. Pilling’s Successors, 1974 • Scottish Country Dances in Diagrams, Fifth Edition, by F.L. Pilling’s Successors, 1980.

I’ll send the contents updates once the publications are entered.

And based on the publication history given in the fifth edition, the first three editions are:

• Scottish Country Dances in Diagrams, by F.L. Pilling, 1955 • Scottish Country Dances in Diagrams, Second Editon, by F.L. Pilling, 1958 • Scottish Country Dances in Diagrams, Third Edition, by F.L. Pilling’s Successors, 1969.

I can’t help with the contents of these.

Cheers,

Mark.

Hello Mark, Its quick to add new publication entries so I have done this:
Ed 4: http://my.strathspey.org/dd/publication/1516/
Ed 5: http://my.strathspey.org/dd/publication/1517/

Linking 600 or so dances to each one would take much longer and Im a bit sceptical whether the editing team will find the time for that for these now superceded editions. Apart from adding names (and page numbers if you supply them) we would need to ensure the database does not think these books are the primary sources for the dances, especially not RSCDS ones.

However if you have the lists of the dances included in each book and submit the relevant list in an issue for each of those two publications we can at least link those issues to the publication record for those wanting to know when particular dances were added or removed to the Pillings series.

NB if your lists have one dance per line you will need to add two spaces at the end of each line to prevent the web page from running them all together as a single paragraph (I did this for the above lines with the two publications).

Without any expectation of getting lists of dances in the three earlier books I do not currently see a good reason to add records for them. Cheers, Murrough.

We can take care of the “primary source” issue by assigning appropriate priorities to the dance-publication links. I left some room for older Pilling editions in the priority list just on the off-chance.

If we get lists of the dances (preferably with sources or devisers, which might be a bit of an issue because the Pilling books traditionall have had a cavalier disregard of such trifles – likely because it didn’t really matter in the good old days before the floodgates were opened and any random Joe Schmo was allowed to make up new dances) I could probably bulk-add the links.

Also note that the earlier the Pilling edition, the fewer dances are in it. I haven’t checked but I don’t think the 4th edition has anywhere near 600 dances.

I have a 2nd edition of the Pilling book (in addition to a 4th and 5th edition) in case we ever decide to add this as a publication. I guess if we’d ask around we might locate someone who is in a position to furnish a list of dances in the 1st and 3rd editions for completeness.

Hi Murrough and Anselm,

Do you have a program that can batch load the data based on a list of the, or can you run a file of SQL insert statements file against the database?

Cheers,

Mark.

Hi,

For what it’s worth, the 4th ed. has 508 dances, and 5th ed. has 558.

One of the dances doesn’t exist in the database yet, so it might be an idea to enter it prior to trying to bulk upload.

Name: Miss Cholmondeley’s Reel No credit or original source given in Pilling. 32 bar reel for 3 couples in a 4 couple longwise set.

The dance is much the same as Mrs. Cholmondeley’s Reel (#4744), but the figure in bars 17-24 has been simplified to 1s dance down the middle and cast up around the 3s into 2nd place.

And the previous question should have read “based on a list of the publication and dance id’s and page numbers”.

Hi Mark. I am reassigning this to Anselm who is the only one who can make a bulk upload which he seems willing to do. He will have to tell you exactly what format he wants.

For Miss or Mrs Cholmondeley’s Reel this may be better addressed with an Alias entry for the name and a note about the revision. But again I will let Anselm decide. Cheers, Murrough

Hi Anselm,

I have a Python script and data file to add the contents of these two Pilling books. What’s the best way of sending this to you?

Cheers,

Mark
