Issue 178: Error in diagram

Description

In the half reel of three on bars 17-20, the leading man is actually in the other reel. The description says »1st woman … dances a half reel of three with 2nd couple«, but at that point in the dance, 2nd couple is in third place and 3rd couple at the top (the 3-couple knot at the end of the dance rectifies this).

For the Reels my crib now says “Rsh to 2cnr”. Hope that is clearer. Eric

There is another little mistake in the diagram in the part of 1st cpl for bars 9-12. The diagram indicates “1st cpl cross RH [X_R] AND THEN 1st couple pass RSh [in the skatch of the paths]…”. To be correct, the paths of 1st cpl in the sketch have to start 2 bars later, i.e. 1M and 1W already crossed and now face out on own sides. (The positions on the supporting couples are still correct because they only have set for 2 bars.)

Cheers, Heiko

Sorry, Heiko, I don’t understand. The diagram shows 1c cross [though “RH” is missing] [2 bars] and then cast [2 bars]. The corners set {2] and 1/2 RHA [2]. Repeat all. I see no problem. Where do I go wrong? Eric

I’ve uploaded a revised diagram, with corrected reels and without the first XR which I had shown on bar 9, leaving the paths of 1C crossing over and now with an R to indicate handing. Thanks everyone for pointing out these errors.

Hi Eric,

your interpretation of the diagram is not exactly correct (possibly because you have the dance in mind).

The diagram show 1c cross RH [the subscript R is actually present not missing]. However, the following diagram does not show the cast only, but since it shows a “1c pass RSh” [the parallel lines across the set, which were already covered by the X_R before] AND then the cast. To show only the cast, 1s are not on opposite sides facing in (because that was before the cross 2bars ago), but have to be on own sides facing out (right after the cross, to continue with the cast - thus the lines crossing the set should no be there, because they are over already).

The problem is, that the diagram for 1c bars 9-12 does actually show 6 bars, as the first two bars are kind of repeated once with hands and once without.

All movements of the supporting people are correct.

Do you see now what I mean?

Best, Heiko

Ooops, my explanation opened the issue again… I close it again.

@Keith, I like your way to fix the issue… would it also be possible to place an XR there instead of just an R?

Cheers, Heiko

I’ve changed it to XR.
In some ways I prefer just the R as it is neater and does not duplicate the crossing part of the figure which is shown by the dancer’s paths, just commenting on how they cross.

Thanks Heiko; I looked at the diagram, and completely overlooked the preceding X_R.

Keith; I like the new diagram for 9-16. There is still one error. On bar 17 you have corrected the half reels, but the man now goes up (from own side). The “man-dot” is wrong. Eric

This is becoming really confusing.

At the end of bar 16, 1st couple is in second place, own sides, while the supporting couples are on opposite sides, 2nd couple in third place and 3rd couple at the top. The dance description says:

17–20:: 1st woman, giving right shoulder to 2nd woman, dances a half reel of three with 2nd couple. Meanwhile, 1st man, giving right shoulder to 3rd man, dances a half reel of three with 3rd couple.

This means that 1st woman goes down to dance what amounts to a half figure of eight around 2nd woman (who starts the figure in 3rd man’s place) and ends up in second place on opposite sides. Similiarly, 1st man goes up to give right shoulder to 3rd man (in 1st woman’s place) to finish in second place on own sides. This was wrong when I first looked at the diagram, and prompted me to log the issue to begin with, and it now appears to be wrong in the diagram again.

1st couple comes back to own sides by means of the two-handed turn on bars 21-24, and 3rd couple and 2nd couple are exchanged to achieve the final progression of 213 by means of the three-couple knot at the end.

Please disregard my previous comment; apparently my browser saw fit to show me an earlier version of the diagram. The one on the server now appears to be correct.
