Issue 1838: Correction to tunes

Object

Submitter

Assigned to

Priority

Disposition

Description

The lead tune on this recording is #2614 Miss McPherson Grant of Ballindalloch’s Jig.

This is possibly the case with some, if not all, the other recordings of tune #4749 Miss Macpherson Grant’s Jig. The confusion arises because the tune name for #2614 is given in Book 37 as “Miss McPherson Grant’s Jig—of Ballindalloch”.

Source: comparing the music from Book 37 and with the recording on the CD.

Okay… we definetely talk about the same tune here, I listened into all name variations of tunes. The name of the tune though seems to differ throughout the centuries ;-) with McPherson, MacPherson, with or without “of Ballindalloch” … with capitalized P, without … According to a quick name research, I would go for “Miss McPherson Grant Of Ballindalloch” (with the name spelling doubling the official dance name), not even with " 's Jig " appended and add other variants as aliases. It IS a Jig in the long run, but I think often the type wasn’t attached to the tune name. BUT I could be wrong here and would appreciate some input from the team.

We’ll be going with whatever the tune is called in William Marshall’s original collection, a copy of which is sitting upstairs near my piano. I’ll check what it says tomorrow.

If musicians in their recordings use different names it can help in searching if common variants are available as aliases. In particular I think the SCDDB search does not yet seamlessly handle Mac vs Mc variants (though it is case insensitive). Searches for shorter versions will succeed in matching a longer form but not vice versa. That kind of consideration has guided my choice of adding aliases for tunes which cannot really make up their mind about their identity.

According to Marshall’s Scottish Airs, Melodies, Strathspey, Reels, &c. for the Piano Forte, Harp, Violin & Violoncello. With appropriate basses., known to its friends as Marshall’s First Collection, the tune is called “Miss McPherson Grant’s Jig, of Ballindalloch”. Ballindalloch, if you must know, is in Moray, south-west of Aberlour and north-east of Grantown-on-Spey, near the river Spey, and has an eponymous castle and a bunch of famous whisky distilleries.

Thanks to you all, I like those team challenges. Amended the “Miss McPhersons Grant’s Jig” entry to the “Marshall” name and added all kinds of aliases. Connected all to what was the duplicate “Mac Pherson” entry and deleted the latter. Issue closed.
