Original instructions written by John Drewry in The Bon Accord Book of Scottish Country Dances state:

Bars 1-8
1st couple and 2nd couple set on sides, then dance four hands round to the left one and a half times (12 slip steps) to finish on wrong sides with 1st couple in second place and 2nd couple at the top.

Bars 25-32 “Reels of three on side with crossing”

1st couple continue turning by the right hand on bars 25-26, moving down and crossing to third place on opposite sides. They cast up to second place. Giving right hands, they lead up crossing back to own sides in top place, then cast off to second place.

3rd couple dance out and up to second place, then giving right hands they lead up crossing over to top place on opposite sides. They cast off to second place, then giving right hands they lead down, crossing back to original places.

2nd couple dance out and down to second place (allowing 3rd couple to pass in front), then giving right hands they lead down crossing to third place on opposite sides. They cast up to second place (again allowing 3rd couple to pass in front), then giving right hands they lead up crossing back to own sides in top place.
