Description

on the RSCDS music cassette (RSCDS 24) Music for Teaching played by Robert MacKay (and produced by the Publications and Research Committee of the RSCDS in response to requests from teachers for recorded music suitable for use in teaching Sottish Country Dancing throughout the world) I found – besides – a number of 8 or 16 bar phrases of music in jig, reel and strathspey time (tempo slow, slow to normal) also music for 1. a 8x32 bar jig 4’59” (I lo’e nae a Laddie but Ane, I Lost My Love, Wi’a Hundred Pipers, There cam’ a Young Man). 2. a 8x32 bar reel 4’54” (Breakdown, Lochmaben Hornpipe, Callum Bheg, The Fairy Dance). 3. a 4x32 bar strathspey 4’34” (Lady Caroline Montague, The Banks of the Clyde, Lady Mary Ramsay, Castles in the air). 4. a 4x32 bar strathspey. for highland steps 4’18” (Lord Moira, Rose among the Heather, Highland Whisky, Lady Madeline Sinclair). And 5. a 2x64 bars of pas de valse 4’18” , suitable for The Yellow Haired Laddie (book 12) or for 4x32 bars of pas de valse (The Yellow Haired Laddie, Wandering Willie). All tune are – according to the inlay – selected by Robert MacKay and are traditional. As there are also cd’s these days -I think- with a selection of x times y bars without specifiing a certain dance, I thought I’ll just mention this item.

Hi team, after going through the database it seems we NEVER added any teaching recordings/albums at all to the database. If that’s “a thing”, then there’s no point in adding this album (MC only, as it seems). It makes no sense to create entries for such generic recordings, I guess; so IF I add this album, I would only copy over the track information to the notes section. Shall I do something or rather not?

There’s obviously a slippery slope from “teaching” media to media that contains generic tracks for “Any good …”-type dances. I don’t think we need to trouble ourselves with albums like the CD the RSCDS used to have which had 8-bar phrases with a pre-canned “Ready … and”. There could be an argument for at least adding the complete dances from the MC in question here, but we may not want to bother because it’s unlikely to be in very widespread use.

Hi Wanda, after a short discussion with the team I decided to not put the album/tracks online, as the whole MC seems more of a teaching production and it makes no real sense to pick out the “any good for whatever” recordings of this specific media. But thank you for making us aware of the production. I will set your submission to a state where we still can revise this decision at due time.
