Description

Hi all,

I am a bit mystified about the tunes listed on the database for this dance. I have the relevant recordings, and they all sound the same to me. That is ``Kingussie Flower’’ and “Bed o Flowers” both sound identical. (It is true that I am not a musician, so maybe I am wrong.) Also there is a recording (the one I use) by STan Hamilton “Scottish Dance Time Vol 3” track 8.

Hi Rod,

Thanks for this. Book 21 gives two tunes. Searching the tune archives for “Kingussie Flower” shows the first one (Tune 1 in the book). I could not find anything by searching for “Bed o’ Flowers”. Neither title is actually mentioned in Book 21. Im no musician either but just looking at the scores the two tunes have some differences as well as some similarities. Im not sure how similar they might sound.

The Stan Hamilton recording is in the database. Maybe you were saying it does not mention either of those named tunes?

Anselm once told me it was common for the tunes listed by musicians for a recording might simply not bother to mention the “original” tune. I guess thats what may have happened here.

If you can confirm that track has the Kingussie Flower tune I will add it to the list of tunes for that recording.

Other than that I have no idea. Maybe a mail to the strathspey list? I think there are some musicians there.

Cheers, Murrough
