Issue 3129: Missing recommended tune

Object
Raising The Anchor (Dance)
Submitter
Nicolas “Niols” Jeannerod
Assigned to
Viktor Lehmann
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

If I am not mistaken, a recommended tune for this dance is https://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/1937/. I base this on a draft version of the Originally Ours books of tunes by George Meikle. Maybe someone with “Vive La Danse!” or “The Tokyo Set” could confirm?

Disposition changed to “Fixed” (previously “Being handled”)

Iain Boyd confirmed via e-mail that there is no specific tune recommendation from his side. He stated: “My published comments are: Any suitable reel in the style of the ‘suitable recorded music’ played AABB. However, my original comments are: Any suitable reel with a hornpipe ‘flavour’ played AABB.”
No changes required here.

Thanks for checking! I wonder what this Black Mountain Reel business is about then. I might ask George Meikle one of these days. I know some dances refer to a tune “Any Good […]”. Would it make sense then to add such an information here? Maybe even twice “Any Good Reel”, once with the published comments and once with the original comments?

I don’t know what “this Black Mountain Reel business” is in the context of this issue, but for the record, when Derek Haynes first published The Black Mountain Reel, the suggested tune was “Trumpet Hornpipe”, but bands today play “The Black Mountain Reel” by Jim Arthur. Our database entry lists both tunes and I have just amended it to show the relationships.

Good idea, I added “any good reel” to the tune section. I only put the original comment in as it feels this describes better as to what Iain wants as his published comment. The “Black Mountain Reel” recordings seem to have gotten in as they have the same lead tune as the “Raising the Anchor” recording. I would normally tend to delete those now as the decision on what lead tune was used for that is with Jim Lindsay, not Iain, and it is a bit of a stretch to add all recordings with the same tune then.
