Issue 3148: Providing a crib for this dance. I don't have Jeff's permission to do so...

Description: I added this crib as a note in my dance list so that I would have it available to my dancers for Tuesday class. The annotation stated I should not do that but add it on this page. I assume this is what you meant???

1-8 1C dance in joining NH briefly & cast off one place. (2C up 3-4.) 1C dance down bet 3C and cast up to 2nd place. 9-16 1C-2C-3C set & link twice to finish 3x, 1x, 2x. 17-20 1C dance in toward each other, pull RSh back, cast out partner’s side and dance rnd 1CR posns to finish: 1W bet 2C facing down; 1M bet 3C facing up. Meanwhile 2CRs set and change places giving RH. 21-24 1C dance in toward each other, pull RSh back to cast out the ends and dance rnd 4CR posns to finish in 2nd place own sides. Meanwhile 1CRs set and change places giving RH. 25-32 1C dance 3RH across to the R, pass P RSh; dance 3LH across with other cpl to 2nd place own side.

If the deviser of the dance would prefer you do not add a crib to the database then we ought to respect their request (you said you do not have Jeff’s permission).

In general though if you want to add your own cribs for other dances you can use the Add button from the dance Overview tab, then the Add Crib option. You need to enter the crib text in Anselm’s “ACE Markdown” format. I wrote a help page for that at https://my.strathspey.org/u/murrough/docs/ContributedCribs/

Perhaps it needs to be clarified, but I think the note in the dance list editor is intended to encourage using that Add Crib option so new cribs are available to everyone, not just hiding in a dance list. But that assumes the deviser is happy with this which seems not to be the case here.

There’s a difference between “deviser has not given permission” and “deviser has objected”. In our experience, some notable examples to the contrary notwithstanding, people don’t seem to mind if the database contains cribs for their dances. If people do in fact explicitly object then we extend them the common courtesy of not publishing cribs for their dances (it would be a point of legal contention whether we could be forced to do so, but I’m trying to avoid antagonising people if I can – the first thing a court of law would have to figure out is whether the choreography of a Scottish country dance, as opposed to a textual description of that choreography, is copyrightable in the first place, which would be a very interesting question), but if devisers remain silent then we take that as consent.

For that matter, I doubt that the MiniCribs people, including the late Charles Upton, or F. L. Pillings and his successors have obtained a-priori consent from the devisers of every single dance they have dealt with; certainly in case of the Wee Green Book, having a diagram for one’s dance in there is an acknowledgement of importance that most devisers would probably have welcomed. So we seem to be in good company.
