Hi, I sometimes see Bratach Bàna with an accent, and sometimes without. It is listed here without, and there is no mention of it anywhere. In the Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary, it is mixed. Which is correct? It might be worth acknowledging that people write it both ways, and stating which way it was actually published. Cheers, Ian

There seems to be no accent in my copy of the original Bon Accord book. Nor in the republication in the RSCDS 30 Popular Dances vol 2.
Normally the SCDDB name follows what is actually in the deviser’s published text (irrespective of typos etc). But if the accent is correct gaelic we could add an extra info note and a spelling alias. Perhaps replacing the jokey one?

As Murrough notes, we usually go by the spelling in the original publication. In the case of “Bratach Bana” the overwhelming number of references seems to eschew the accent. There are probably many dance publications with Gaelic dance names that would make actual Gaelic speakers cringe.
If you do a “quick search” for “Bratach Bàna” (with the accent), “Bratach Bana” (without the accent) will be found thanks to trigram matching. The only case where a spelling alias would actually be needed would be for complex dance search, where “Bratach Bàna” (with the accent) will not match “Bratach Bana” (without the accent). If John Drewry had spelled it “Bratach Bàna”, then “Bratach Bana” (without the accent) would also match “Bratach Bàna” (with the accent) because searches without accents match dance titles with accents (but not vice versa). The filter box on the “Dances” list page will require the exact spelling but that doesn’t really matter because once you’ve typed “B-r-a-t-a” you’re basically there, anyway, and the same applies to other contexts where the database does autocompletion for dance names (mostly in the dance list editor and the Django admin).

Look at the video thumbnails: two of them show the name WITH the accent. We should definitely add the accented name as a spelling alias (and drop the silly one). Even if it’s not important for spelling searches, users should see that the accent is there. Put a short explanation into “Extra info” too.
