Description

According to the the description on Sue McKinnell’s (the devisor) dance page (given as online source on the Strathspey Database page), the dance “The Magic Dishpan” is a 32 bar Strathspey. Also only the first 8 bars of the diagrams by Keith Rose match the description.

Sue McKinnell has changed this dance. This is indicated on http://suedan.com/dances/dance2002.php which has the comment “REWORKED” beside the name of this dance. I had downloaded a copy in October 2012 and drew the diagram a year later. The diagram accurately reflects that text: The Magic Dishpan by Sue McKinnell 44x32 Jig for 4C (Square Set) 1-8 All dance a grand chain, ending in original places. 9-16 All dance interlocking rights and lefts: 1C & 3C dance rights and lefts as normal across and back. 2C & 4C begin by changing places RH with partners, then changing places across the set with the person opposite LH, change places RH with partners, and change places across the set LH. 17-24 1C & 3C dance RH across once round, then circle four hands around to the left to original places. 25-28 1C & 3C dance LH across once round. 29-32 All chase 1 place CCW, then turn partners LH once round to end facing. End 2, 3, 4, 1. Repeat 4 times.

I note that both this original text and the reworked text have the same date: 04/02.

I pointed out the 44x32 Jig error to Sue in October 2012.

I will revise my diagram to conform with this reworked text.

When dances are changed there will always be people who remember / have saved the original text and not know that is was reworked. We need to describe the reworking in “Extra Info”, and include the obsolete version of the instructions there for reference. Cheers. Eric

Music type corrected.

The statement that only the 1st 8 bars of Keith’s diagram match the description is not entirely true but close:

  • bars 9-16 (1C & 3C set advancing, turn partners BH once round opening into circle left once round, breaking early enough to end in original places) is missing.

  • bars 9-16 in the diagram is actually 17-24

  • bars 17-24 in the diagram is not found in the description

  • bars 25-28 is danced by 2c+4c, not 1c+3c

  • bars 31-32 should be “all set”
