Issue 851: shoulder pass correction

I fail to understand this “correction”. I have a PDF of the original description, which reads:

5-16 2nd, Ist and 3rd couples dance rights and lefts for three couples.

17-24 Ist couple pass left shoulders to dance a half diagonal reel of four with first corners, and pass right shoulders at the end to dance another half diagonal reel of four with second corners. Ist couple finish in second place on opposite sides

The natural entry into the diagonal half reel of 4 is Lsh. The instructions say the same. Minicrib says this explicitly, the Keith’s diagram does not mention it.

Between the two half reels [bar 21] the instructions say Rsh. Both Minicrib and Keith’s diagram specify Lsh, so they are are in error.

But this comment tells us that the transition on bar 17 should be Rsh !! That would be most unnatural at the end of the R&L for three couples.

Was the comment perhaps meant to apply to the transition on bar 21?

Holly will contact Dale Birdsall, but suggests that in the meantime we keep to the original description (in the book) which says that 1c pass LEFT shoulder on bar 17 and RIGHT shoulder on bar 21 (between the two half reels of 4). There is no e-crib. Minicrib is correct. The diagram does not specify the shoulder on bar 17 (but Lsh flows naturally, and Rsh would be extremely unnatural seeing how 1c arrives in 2pl on [16]) On bar 21 the diagram is in error; it should be Rsh.
