Person Daniel(Donald) Dow 1781

Lived
1732 — 1783
Areas of activity
  • Composer of tunes

Mr Dow’s first name is sometimes given as “Daniel” and sometimes as “Donald”. Both of these are acceptable translations of the Gaelic “Domhnull”.

Further explanations from issue 3320:

There was a habit of Presbyterian ministers in the early eighteenth century to substitute the nearest (in sound) biblical name to the Gaelic when recording births. So it’s likely his given name was “Domhnull” or something similar.

His music was published under the name “Daniel”, but his private activities (e.g., marriage register entry) are under the name “Donald”.
