Often wrongly attributed to Andrew Rankine. Andrew Rankine used the A part of this tune and came up with a different B part; see The New High Level.

The title refers to the ‘New’ High Level Bridge in Newcastle on Tyne. It was built between 1846 to 1849 and was the first railway bridge over the River Tyne. It was unusual in that there is a road deck below the railway track. it is 112 feet above high water mark. (Information provided by Iain C. Gent, Linlithgow)
