Maggieknockater Revisited

A 32-bar jig for four couples in a longwise set

In this dance, 3rd and 4th couples start on the opposite sides of the set.

1–4
1st and 4th couples, giving right hands, cross over. 1st couple cast off (2nd couple step up) while 4th couple cast up (3rd couple step down).
5–8
1st and 4th couples dance right hands across once round. 1st man and 4th woman finish in promenade hold facing the women’s side; 1st woman and 4th man finish in promenade hold facing the men’s side.
9–12
1st man and 4th woman, and 4th man and 1st woman, dance half a diagonal reel of four with 2nd and 3rd men. On bar 12, 1st and 4th couples join hands with partners in promenade hold, 1st couple facing the men’s side and 4th couple facing the women’s side.
13–16
1st and 4th couples dance half a left-shoulder diagonal reel of four with 2nd and 3rd women. On bar 16, 1st man and 4th woman join hands in promenade hold facing the men’s side, and 4th man and 1st woman join hands in promenade hold facing the women’s side.
17–20
1st man and 4th woman, and 4th man and 1st woman, dance half a diagonal reel of four with 3rd and 2nd men. On bar 20, 1st and 4th couples join hands with partners in promenade hold, 1st couple facing the women’s side and 4th couple facing the men’s side.
21–24
1st and 4th couples dance half a left-shoulder diagonal reel of four with 3rd and 2nd women.
25–28
1st man and 4th woman, giving right hands, turn once round to finish in 2nd and 3rd places on the women’s side. At the same time, 1st woman and 4th man, giving left hands, turn once round to finish in 2nd and 3rd places on the men’s side.
29–32
Retaining right hands, 1st woman and 4th man dance across the set, 1st woman crossing over in front of 4th man. They separate and dance back to the men’s side. At the same time, 1st man and 4th woman dance across the set, passing outside 1st woman and 4th man, then, giving left hands to cross, dance back to the women’s side. All finish in the order 2, 4, 1, 3. (NB. This movement is similar to bars 1–4 of an Espagnole.)

Repeat from new positions.

This dance is fairly obviously inspired by John Drewry’s The Bees of Maggieknockater. The dancing couples’ movements during bars 9–24 are identical to the original.
