For competent sets, the side couples, during bars 17 - 24, may dance rights and lefts, starting on the sides. If this is done, the right hands across should finish where it started, so all are in line across the dance, facing up or down, as they are at the start of the phrase. This provides 2 great covering opportunities - bar 17 and bar 21. The end of the left-hands across has to be judged carefully so that all the dancers are where they should be for the start of the reels.The dance works best if it is more of a ‘square’ than a ‘long’ set when these rights and lefts are done.
I composed this dance on the sunny balcony of an empty mountain chalet whilst I waited for my ski-touring companions who were moving faster uphill than my injured knee would allow me to climb; what else can one do for 2 hours in the sun on a deserted mountainside?
