My minny coft me a new gown,
The kirk maun hae the gracing o’t.
Were I to lie with you, kind sir,
I’m fear’d ye’d spoil the lacing o’t.
I’m o’er young, I’m o’er young,
I’m o’er young to marry yet,
I’m o’er young, 'twad be a sin
To tak me frae my mammie yet.
The above is a stanza from the song upon which Robert Burns based his “I’m O’er Young to Marry Yet”, about which Burns said, “The chorus of this song is old. – The rest of it, such as it is, is mine.”
Burns’ song, exactly as it appeared in James Johnson’s *The Scots Musical Museum’, Volume 2, of 1788, is as follows:
