Description

After adding CDDB IDs for a couple of CDs and then getting requests to enter missing track times, I wrote a little script to see how many other albums have tracks that have zero seconds playing time (using a daily dump of the database).

Even ignoring Waltz and other less common time signatures there are over 200 albums (of about 800 total) which have at least one track with 0:00 playing time. Often just one or two tracks missing from an otherwise completely described CD. I can provide more details on request.

Of those 200+ CDs I own four. The only one I have which is missing all its track times is The Third Kirkbrae Collection for which I give all the times below.

For a few other CDs I have where just one track is missing a time I give, further below, the times just for the missing track. Though I wonder if some upstream database (eg freedb?) is missing this data too?

One comment is that for two of these CDs (Blackwater, Highlander Music) my iTunes consistently gives track times 3 to 6 seconds longer than are in the database, but this is not the case for the Special Requests CD. It looks as though the Pace column is simply computed from the track length, so would be affected by the time for chords and silence before/after the music. Since there does not seems to be a consistent approach I have not tried to adjust for this and have just given what iTunes tells me.

I have updated all the track times I reported a while back.

I am still mildly curious why my iTunes reports slightly different times to those already in the database for some of these albums.

We generally take the track times from whatever is printed on the CD case. The track times that are printed on the CD case usually correspond to the actual track lengths on the CD but there is no guarantee that they are always the same. Some SCD CDs apparently measure track times “from chord to chord”, which is useful because it lets you judge the tempo of the recording more accurately, but this is by no means standard. In that case the actual track times would be somewhat longer than what it says on the CD case.
