Thanks. However I have not yet changed the spelling of the Person entry (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/443/) to have Whitaker with one t. I just added a note on the spelling linking to this issue.
Checking old RSCDS books, I find the spelling is “Whitaker” with one t in Book 15, but “Whittaker” with double t in Books 16, 19 and 20.
I also looked up their publications in the British Library catalogue and find a similar scattering of publications with single or double t. Eg http://explore.bl.uk/BLVU1:LSCOP-ALL:BLL01003947418 vs http://explore.bl.uk/BLVU1:LSCOP-ALL:BLL01004249586
Unfortunately it seems the database does not have spelling aliases for people which would have been a good way to record that Whittaker had an unreliable spelling. Whatever choice we make will be wrong for referencing some publications.
