Hey everybody, according to this site it is quite likely that both tunes are the same. Even more, it seems that The Marquis of Huntly’s Farewell is identical too (would fit, as it is a S32 in our database too). https://thesession.org/tunes/6666 Shall I merge these three entries to one, add the aliases and connect them to the recordings?

Hmm. There are many Marquis of Huntly tunes so I would be wary of combining them. Some are likely aliases but Im fairly sure some are not.

I tried looking in the Traditional Tune Archive and found pages http://tunearch.org/wiki/Marquis_of_Huntly%27s_Strathspey_(1)(The) and https://tunearch.org/wiki/Marquis_of_Huntly%27s_Farewell(The)

There seem to be several different versions of the Strathspey/Reel in different keys and time signatures but to my eye the Farewell tune looks different.

Playing safe and adding a cross link between possible duplicates at least allows people to quickly navigate between them. Having to disentangle wrongly merged entries is harder.

The Farewell version on tunearch looks different indeed. Strange how such musical sites can come up with such different info on what is identical and what not. Okay then, no merger. Plus I think it will be hard to cross link as we have no clue whether “Marquis of Huntly” is rather identical to the Strathspey or the Farewell version, right?

The Marquis of Huntly’s Strathspey and the Marquis of Huntly’s Farewell are two completely different tunes by William Marshall. (To make matters worse, there’s also The Marquis of Huntly’s Favourite, but that’s a 9/8 jig. What can we say, after all the guy was Marshall’s life-long boss.)

As far as the recordings associated with this tune go, the ones by Ron Gonnella, the Irvine Valley SDB, and Chris Duncan and Catherine Strutt are definitely The Marquis of Huntly’s Strathspey, but the Bobby Brown recording is in fact of The Marquis of Huntly’s Farewell.

I had a look at the entry for Marquis of Huntly, too. This gives two sources; the tune printed in The Fiddle Music of Scotland is actually The Marquis of Huntly’s Strathspey, while the one in Kerr’s Collection is really The Marquis of Huntly's Highland Fling (by George Jenkins, which is also in The Fiddle Music of Scotland) . We should probably move the reference to The Fiddle Music over to the Strathspey, and check the recordings to see exactly which tune they have. I’ve filed a separate issue to that effect.
