Hi Anselm, Hope all is well with you. I have just noticed that someone has kindly added details of our new CD to the database, but unfortunately there are a lot of errors. I would be very grateful if these could be corrected. They are as follows: Tracks 1-21: the “type” column is wrong in every case, e.g. track 1 should be R32 5 (not R5 32), and similarly for every other track. Track 4 (Miss Grace Hay’s Delight): the duration is 2’54 (not 2’56). Track 5 (Itchy Fingers): tune 1 ‘Itchy Fingers’ was composed by P/M Robert Pinkman; (P/M Robert Mathieson arranged and published it). Track 7 (Love, Port and Sherry): tune 1 ‘Love, Port and Sherry’ is traditional, not composed by me! Track 8 (72nd’s Farewell to Aberdeen): tune 1 ‘72nd’s Farewell to Aberdeen’ is traditional, not composed by me! Track 11 (Jack’s Delight): “Type” should be R32 6 Track 11 (Jack’s Delight): tune 3 ‘Ishbell’s Reel’ (composer Michael Philip) is published in ‘The Cardenden Collection’ Track 12 (Da Slockit Light): tune 1 ‘Da Slockit Light’ was composed by Tom Anderson (not ‘traditional’) Track 12 (Da Slockit Light): tune 1 is mis-spelt (it should be ‘Slockit’, not ‘Sockit’) Track 14 (Miss Susan Cooper): “Type” should be R48 4 Track 15 (Ladylea Hill): tune 4 ‘Mrs B Jolly’ was composed by Bert Murray (not Bobby Murray) Track 16 (Miss Gayton’s Hornpipe): the duration is 2’42 (not 3’42) Track 17 (Country Dance): tune 2 ‘Athlone Jig’ was not composed by Angus Fitchett; I believe it is traditional Track 21 (Endearing Young Charms): tune 4 ‘Leaving Lismore’ is usually attributed to Margaret Martin-Hardie (not A MacLaren) Many thanks for your help, Chris Dewhurst (on behalf of Chris, Julie & Nick Dewhurst)

Hello Chris,
You need to thank Christine Parker-Jones for her continual behind the scenes work adding new CDs to the database.

While actually looking for something else I had also noticed that all the numbers of bars and numbers of repeats were swapped for this album and mentioned it privately to Christine. We will fix it. Along with the other errors.

OK, Ive done most of them except the attribution of the last two tunes (Athlone Jig & Leaving Lismore) which are widely used in other recordings. So I imagine someone more expert on tunes that I am had reasons for entering them that way. To be looked at again later…

Oh and the database currently has no record of the Cardenden Collection. Do you have details of publisher, date, contents or a good link to find them?

Chris Dewhurst supplied a lot more information by email (copied below) which I used, two weeks ago, to update the relevant tunes and publications. Belatedly closing this issue.

I have checked the list of tunes by Michael Philip, and indicated [separately] which volume they are from. There is just one tune I can’t trace at the moment, which is ‘Jessie Burns’.

The Cardenden Collection Volume 2 was published by Deeay Music, Forfar, December 2007.

The Cardenden Connection Volume 3 was published by Deeay Music, Forfar and Michael Philip; there is no date given in the publication; note that the title is “The Cardenden CONNECTION” (rather than Collection). Fortunately you will still be able to use the short name “Cardenden 3”!

Regarding “The Athlone Jig”, I am pretty confident that the tune is not by Angus Fitchet, since it is not included in any of the 3 volumes of his music which were published by “The National Association of Accordion and Fiddle Clubs”. According to the foreword in Volume 3 (written by Nicol McLaren) this is a complete anthology of Angus’s compositions. Of course, it is always possible that a lesser-known tune might have been missed, but this seems unlikely, since “The Athlone Jig” has been recorded by many well-known bands.

I have not yet come across “The Athlone Jig” in a publication, but the same tune, in a longer form, and with some small melodic differences, was published in “The Francis Roche Collection of Traditional Irish Music, Volume 3, 1927, Page 44, Tune 140” under the name “The Bridge of Athlone”, so whilst both the tune and the name have been shortened, it would seem reasonable to assume that “The Athlone Jig” is ‘Traditional’.

“Leaving Lismore” is less clear: it is published in the Scots Guards Pipe Music Volume 2, where it is credited to Mrs Martin Hardie; it is used as a hymn tune (for “Spirit of God, Come Dwell Within Me”) in “The Church Hymnary”, where the composer is given as Margaret Martin-Hardie, and it has several other titles, including the Gaelic “Fagail Liosmor”. I notice it is also included in the SCD Database under this name, link https://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/6879/ The MCPS licence for our CD gives the writer’s name as “Hardie”, and indicates that the tune is a “non-copyright work” in the public domain. Many online sources also give Margaret Martin-Hardie as the composer, so whilst I am no expert, it seems likely to me that either the tune was composed by Margaret Martin-Hardie (the most commonly-held view), or that it is a traditional tune which she arranged (for which I have seen no evidence as yet). The name “A MacLaren” (given as the composer in the SCD Database) is not commonly associated with the tune.
