Issue 2587: links in SCD Dictionary for cribs by devisor for 19 dances

Object
Brian Charlton (Person)
Submitter
Wanda van Taanom (taanom_421)
Assigned to
Viktor Lehmann
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

See also earlier issue on Laidlaw. This devisor also has provided (extensive) cribs written by himself to the SCDancing Dictionary for 19 of his dances. In the DB only (I think) The Mentor has a link (to 8x32).

Let me know if it has any sense to look for other devisors who made own cribs in SCD Dictionary to make links in DB…

Hey Wanda, I am not sure I fully understand what your point is. “Cribs” to us are shorter text versions and condensed descriptions with lots of abbreviations, made of the full dance description (the version that goes into full detail). Then we have “online sources” which are links to files where a (mostly original) version of the dance description can be found (a PDF file mostly or a website with the description showing).
Charlton has cribs for all of his dances in our database (mostly even two different ones); this cribs do not generate from “links”, they are entered manually into our database, and with a bit of skill and knowledge, anyone can do that. “The Mentor” dance has a link to an online source, yet not to the scottish country dancing dictionary, but to the e-cribs.org website.
If you know of an “online source” of a dance that doesn’t show such an entry you are welcome to let us know.

I expect Wanda meant cases where the SCD dictionary site has a “MaxiCrib” which is much closer to the full text of the original instructions than the typical MinCrib or e-crib which is intended to be compact and fit on a short dance programme.

In the past MaxiCribs were very clearly copyrighted (less obviously these days) but we have made links in some cases, especially where its the only source we know of. We can always do that on request for other dances. Though usually the online source link is used where someone might have to search a bit further and/or in more obscure places to find more detailed instructions, whereas most people who know about SCDDB probably know they can also check SCD dictionary so adding links there seems less of a priority.
