Description

The third tune is listed as The Countess of Cassilis Strathspey but it should be The Edinburgh Castle Reel. I have listened numerous times to the Rising Phoenix set and after dancing to The Craigowl Scottish Dance Band’s version of The Edinburgh Castle Reel, I compared the two tunes, and also asked one of our local musicians her opinion. After listening to the strathspey sample on the server of The Countess, the two tunes sound nothing alike. I say this because the same CD also uses The Earl of Dalkeith in quicktime, but in that instance you can hear they are the same tune at different tempos. For what it’s worth.

Thanks.

Many thanks for the detailed report and for the quite enjoyable detective work it provoked!

I was curious how the database ended up listing completely the wrong tune when you were so clear it was a different one.

So I tried to find if the web had any information about the CD and found https://www.allcelticmusic.com/music/c0e6f9da-f86f-102a-8020-000f1f67beb1/Scottish_Country_Dance_Music.html which helpfully lists the tunes used on the tracks. And that mentions The Countess of Cassilli for the track Rising Phoenix. If thats on the CD itself that explains why the DB editor chose the nearest tune with that name despite the “strathspey” suffix.

I then tried searching the John Chambers tune finder just looking for anything with “cassil”. That has several references with single or double L and simple plural or apostrophe S. Some entries are just Countess of Cassilli, some have Strathspey on the name as well. Those look the same. Then I saw there was also a reference to Countess of Cassilli [Reel].

Very often the same tune has multiple names, but the database had no such name alias for The Edinburgh Castle Reel. But I then thought of checking the score the tune finder website can show you.

To my only moderately musical eye those look pretty much the same (apart from formatting).

So I have now (a) added Countess of Cassilli (in some spellings) as an alias for The Edinburgh Castle Reel and (b) updated the Rising Phoenix recording to use The Edinburgh Castle Reel instead of the Countess of Cassilli Strathspey tune.
