Description

Cribs =

1c cast R into lines across 1s cast round 1st corner to form lines of 3 across Possible addition: Cribs clear, but videos show 1st c. keeping right hands and turning their corners into lines across => Couldn’t a footnote (to the cribs AND the videos) make it clear that 1st c. are NOT to turn corners but just cast around them ? Or is it admitted as an alternative version? Thanks for your help! We have it on our Lanester (Brittany) ball next Sat. ! Cheers, Odile

Disposition changed to »Ignored« (previously »New«)

I would say, the cribs are clear (and the original description says basically the same, just in more detail). Thus, adding another footnote saying the same is just pointing out the obvious and is not necessary.

Videos are always interpretations of the description, and if dancers/dem sets choose to use hands for whatever reason in a dem etc. this is their fault.

While videos might be helpful, one should never mistake them for the original description. Trying to highlight every mistake people do in videos would be by far too much effort.

You could think about having the MC point this out explicitly at the ball to make sure people do it correctly at your ball.

Best wishes, Heiko

My position on this issue is as follows:

  • People do increasingly use videos to prepare for functions, and therefore all videos with a quality level above »Informal/Social« that do not have any comments at all should reflect the dance as originally choreographed, for the benefit of casual observers who aren’t in a position to cross-check the video against the published description.

  • We don’t comment on every single mist^H^H^H^Hspontaneous choreography change people commit in a video.

  • If a video shows a version of a dance that is deliberately different from the published version (because several couples participate in the change, or the change shows up consistently in different turns of the dance) then that should be commented on. In this case the video cannot be »Demonstration quality«.

  • If a video would be »Good« except for a blooper or two then pointing those out and declaring it »Good« would be OK as far as I’m concerned.

(I’m not in a position to look at the video in question just now to see which of the cases, if any, applies.)

I have added the note “On bars 5-6, 1st couple should cast round 1st corner, not turn them.” to the two videos where this error is made.
