Description

Anselm,

I tried to advise Keith Rose that his diagrams for this dance differed from the video currently available on DanceData.

Unfortunately, I get a Page not Found when I try to send a comment.

First, there is uncertainty about the “original” description. I have two documents which look like “originals” for this dance. Both are in a curious format of a table with two columns, and all the text is in capitals. The two documents agree in detail (even in fine typographical detail) for bars 9-48

In one copy, a DOC file, given to me by Charles Upton, bars 1-8 read: 1, 2, 3 & 4 COUPLES PROMENADE ANTI CLOCKWISE, WHILST DANCING COUPLE (5 COUPLE) PROMENADE CLOCKWISE, ACKNOWLEDGING EACH COUPLE IN PASSING. AT THE END OF BAR 4, DANCING COUPLE, DROP LEFT HAND, MAN TURNS LADY UNDER TO FACE ANTI CLOCKWISE, AND THEY PROMENADE ANTI CLOCKWISE, FINISH FACING 1ST COUPLE.

In the second copy, a JPG file coming from Betty MacKenzie (the deviser) via Keith Rose, these bars read: 1, 2, 3 & 4 COUPLES PROMENADE ANTI CLOCKWISE, WHILST DANCING COUPLE (5 COUPLE) TURN RIGHT HAND (4 BARS), TURN LEFT HAND (4 BARS) FINISH FACING 1ST COUPLE.

On SCDDB, the crib and the diagram follow the second description for [1-8].

The video, taken at Kuckucksnest, shows a truncated 40-bar version of this dance, see the “extra Info” supplied there.

Who can shed light on the “original” and on the source of the Kuckucksnest variant?

The video has been removed by the author. The second version “original” is probably the correct one. Still waiting for a definitive reply from the deviser. Eric

On bar 1-8, 5c turns RH, then LH. The older version is obsolete. Original, crib and diagram now agree.
