Description

I have noticed that some teachers are making a point of not giving hands in the first eight bars of “Miss Eleanor”. There is no reference (as is normal) in Book 49. In the past the instruction to give hands related to specific dances, such as “The Gates of Edinburgh”, although it has become customary to give hands in any reflection or mirror reel, As I say above, it is normal for there to be no reference to hands. I would say this is always optional and in these days, when technique seems to have become a dirty word, the giving of hands helps greatly to maintain the shape of the figure, and like most dancers, I suspect, I like and support the giving of hands.

I should perhaps add that I am one of Miss Eleanor’s grandparents. She is three years old now and enjoys walking on the farm where her family lives, and much of this involves the giving of hands. 'nough said?

Dear Bob, thanks for your input and sorry for the long delay in response. We tend to maintain and document what we get as original material and descriptions, so as long as Ann Dix’ instruction is not specifically mentioning “giving hands”, we won’t put it into the ressources (cribs/diagrams). Of course each couple and set of dancers is free to agree on hands if they want to!
