RSCDS Central Iowa Branch has been a Scottish country dance group since the 1970s. We became an RSCDS Branch in 1999. We offer two opportunities to dance each week: Friday nights in Ames and Monday nights in Des Moines. We have several socials each season in both locations, an annual Grand Ball in its 28th year, a Burns' Ball and an annual Day School. We perform occasionally at Scottish events, and for fairs, fetes, and gatherings. We attend and help support other Scottish country dance events in nearby states. We have local musicians who play for some of our social events and performances. We help support informally a student run club at Iowa State University, The Celtic Dance Society. Many young leaders of dance who have been nurtured by this group as students graduate and move across the country to help support Scottish country dance in other areas.
The distances in this list are geodesic distances (“as the crow flies”) between places with dance groups, rather than road distances between dance venues. Also note that while there may be several dance groups in the same town or city, their dance venues may be distant from one another even though they are all lumped together under one marker on the map.
