Our Society was formed in May 1937 to bring together Scots living in Orpington to keep alive the traditions of their homeland. There were over 125 members and activities included tennis, drama, outings, rambles and quiz and film nights. “Reels Classes” enabled members to take a full part in celebrating St Andrew’s, Burns’ Night, Hogmanay, dance socials and ceilidhs (all still held today). Between the 1950s and 1980s members were successful in country and highland dance competitions, including those for children. Quiz and film nights and outings continued into the 1990s but Scottish Country Dancing is the main activity of the Society today.
The distances in this list are geodesic distances (“as the crow flies”) between places with dance groups, rather than road distances between dance venues. Also note that while there may be several dance groups in the same town or city, their dance venues may be distant from one another even though they are all lumped together under one marker on the map.
