Issue 1166: Madame Pipeau

Object
Madame Pipeau (Dance)
Submitter
(jacmeld)
Assigned to
Eric Ferguson
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

Lovely dance. However, viewers should be warned that the filming cuts between takes again and again and again. Very difficult if trying to learn the dance as the personnel keep changing. Confusing. They should have tried recording it once again and managing a suitable take once through. Spoils the recording.

Assigned changed to »EricFerguson« (previously »None«)
Disposition changed to »Fixed« (previously »New«)

Added this note: Note: the video is assembled from a number of separate takes, beautifully linked, but at the cuts any position may suddenly have another dancer. These changes of dancers are confusing and make it difficult to learn the dance from the video. Let’s hope for a new video made in one take.

Just, one more comment. I looked through the viedeo more than once. Obviously, the videos (and the music) where recorded simultaneously (and by comparison one can even figure who’s recordings entered the youtube video). Thus, the cuts could be done as perfect as done here, the time never changed, the music was never interupted, just the camera viewpoint changed within a split-second.

Before and after the cut, there are always exactly the same dancers dancing, so they are actually no different takes, but all was done in one go (with more than one camera). However, I admit that the swap in view-point from top to bottom an back can still be confusing.

Still, as obvious the Paris branch must have at least one full video taken from top and one from the bottom. So please feel free to contact the RSCDS Paris Branch and request that they put online another copy that is not cut. I guess, they easily understand the point.

However, that is not a talk the SCDDB editors can do for you. (However, we would love to hear as soon as you succeed, such that we can add the video link to the database ;)

I think the main issue here is that the camera POV alternates between the top and the bottom of the set. This is nice for variety but sucks if you want to follow individual dancers. This is lovely dancing and a good video but it can’t be “Demonstration quality”. I’m therefore downgrading the video to “Good” – I agree with Heiko that a video from a single camera at the top would be more helpful, and therefore we should leave room in case one is posted eventually (by the Paris Branch or someone else).

Good idea, Anselm.

FYI, I have informed RSCDS Paris branch about this discussion, so let’s hope they upload another version that either only uses top view or only swaps top and bottom view only every 40 bars.

@jacmeld: possibly it would not hurt if you contact Paris branch (http://www.rscdsparis.fr) as well on this to give the idea of a 2nd video more support ;)

BTW, I took the freedom to adjust the Eric’s video-extra-info slightly to reflect, that it is a change of view points, not different takes and different dancers in different positions - to do a bit more justice to the video (it is really well done, but that does not help for the above purpose ;).

Cheers, Heiko
