Description

Wonderful piece of music for the dance: Entered in McNab’s as Earl of Errol’s Reel.

Reference, also from Charles Gore, Scottish Fiddle Index, also quotes the recommended tune as “Miss McMillan’s Quadrille”

  • there is a fault here, which has been propagated by all, and by all with very good intent. However, the tune in Charles Grant has nothing whatsoever to do with the Earl of Errols Reel as in MacNab. The tune in MacNab is in C Major, starting with the low C; Grant’s is in Cm, starting with the high C; MacNab, 2nd part starts with high g, Grant with low G; The tune in MacNab is just entitled "The Earl of Errol’s Reel - in 6/8 - a beautiful tune.

Kind Regards Nigel S. JELKS

Going through the recordings, it is 50:50 of what the lead tune is. Some used “Miss McMillican’s Quadrille”, but a fair amount used “Earl of Errol” which to be honest seems to be the more logical choice if there is a tune of that name… (A few others use none of the two tunes, but some other). Any idea how the suggested tune is picked? Would I be fine to change it without hassle?

The copy of the MacNab Vol.1 I have clearly states “No. 3: The Earl of Errol’s Reel” and below that on a sub-line: “Mrs McMillan’s Quadrille (jig) Charles Grant, MA”. Can’t tell which revision of the book is showing this entry, as the online SCDDB resource for this tune sheet DOESN’T show the subline at all. Yet, I don’t have and can’t find any resource for the C minor version Nigel is talking about. I will leave the entry as is for the time being unless someone can deliver a copy, scan or online resource which makes a comparison possible.

Okay. I got a resource for “Mrs McMillan’s Quadrille” here: https://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/mirror/sfco.puckette.com/jig/Mrs_McMillans_Quadrille/0000

This is absolutely the same tune (with only slight variations) as the one given in the MacNab publication(s). IMHO everything is correct here. Unless I do not receive any copy of another totally different tune of the same name, I consider this issue to be fixed.
