Looking for tunes by Colin Dewar I noticed what look like several duplicate entries for this tune (and a few others).

For “The Inverness Highland Ball” there are: http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/10469/ (first tune in the recording http://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/6978/) http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/10470/ (given as 2nd tune in the same recording) http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/11696/ (no recording)

These entries all have identical spelling, so I presume they are accidental duplicate entries. Should two be removed?

The list of Colin Dewar tunes also has three other pairs of apparent duplicates though in the cases below they all have two slightly different titles. If they got published or listed in CD recordings with two different variants, is it expected that the database keeps both separately? If so, should they at least be linked with aliases?

Thirdly: Up & Doon the Doldenhorn (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/13399/) and Up and Doon the Doldenhorn (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/13256/)

And I wonder if there might perhaps be a typo (missing “s” after the apostrophe) in the title of Jennie’ Reel (http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/13249/) NB this is just a guess - I have no real evidence for this, but a google search turned up https://droenner.eu/index.php/inhalte/itemlist/category/127-musik which has “Jennies reel”, ie with “s” but without apostrophe. I feel Im getting far too pedantic here.

We try to have every tune in the database just once (per rhythm, anyway – one could argue that “Orange and Blue” and “Hot Punch” are the same tune but one is a strathspey and the other is a jig, and unifying them might create more confusion than it mitigates). This is made more difficult by the fact that some tune titles are spelled differently in different places (like different CDs or books of music) as well as the fact that some people who enter new CDs are apparently less diligent about checking for preexisting tune entries with variant spellings than they might perhaps be.

The database has a facility which allows us to say that tune A in the database occurs in recording R under the title B, and this lets us take care of the more egregious cases. I tend not to worry about simple variations like “The” vs. “no The”, but with the propensity of Scottish composers to use elaborate tune titles like “Miss XYZ of ABC’s Favourite Strathspey”, which then turn up in all permutations like “XYZ’s Strathspey”, “Miss XYZ’s Favourite”, etc. this can help clear up ambiguities.

Tune names are among the most problematic areas in SCDDB and could use considerable cleaning-up work, which so far nobody has really volunteered to undertake. In fairness it would be a major job, but every little thing helps.

Dear Anselm,

Apologies if this is somewhat misusing the issue system for a single tune to generalise to all duplicates.

I do not actually know much about tunes, but I did entertain myself this morning writing a little python script to try and identify duplicates of the kind I accidentally found yesterday. This just looks for a 70% match of words in the title (2 of 3, 3 of 4) excluding common words such “a”, “the”, “in”, “for”, “to”, etc.

This is clearly not a perfect algorithm: it certainly finds a few false positives and doubtless misses some real duplicates.

Overall I think the result is not bad actually with about 128 possible duplicate entries which is almost exactly 1% of the 13k tunes in the database. I am not confident I understand the aliases properly but I think there are not many already entered for these dances.

Naively I would think fixing a hundred or so entries is feasible, if tedious, to do by hand given the list which I append below. Though I suppose that depends how much extra checking is required.

If that was done the other aspect of the problem would be to try and improve the user interface for the editors to help them by making a similar check for possible duplicates when entering tunes. I realise that also represents work. I can supply my little script if that would be useful.

The extremely useful support for creating dance lists has a nice feature of suggesting a list of possibilities when you type just one word of a dance name. Does something like that already exist for editors entering tune names? If not, perhaps it could be added since you have clearly already developed the basic support for that sort of functionality.

As for helping out, I am happy to do this kind of thing and also prepared to do some of the tedious work - but I would be afraid of making mistakes in my ignorance of tunes, eg I would worry that “everyone” knows that “Hornpipe (traditional)” with ID 711 is obviously different from the other “Hornpipe (traditional)” with IDs 6029, 10525, etc.

Hi Viktor, I reran my tunecheck script and it printed out about 60 possible duplicates. I may have slightly loosened the criteria after looking at the first set in the original report. Also the list below includes tunes by “traditional” or “unknown” which I excluded from the earlier list as being more likely to be different tunes happening to have the same or similar names. Hopefully Ive added enough trailing spaces to induce ACE to keep the formatting.
