Issue 1338: Difference between crib and diagram

Description

For bars 9-16 the minicrib states “1s and 2s dance RH across a& LH Back” however the diagram shows it as RH across with 2s and LH across with 3s!. Not having access to the original instructions it is unclear which is correct. Could this please be investigated and either the Minicrib or diagram amended to reflect the devisors intent.

Hurrah! I googled " “Cliff Fryer” Harrow " and that produced the “Class programme for the Harrow class on 30th June 2010 [see http://www.harrowscottish.org.uk/docs/ClassCribHarrow2010-06-30.pdf]”, and that page has a long crib for this dance. Here it is.

===================================================

Harrow and District Caledonian Society Dance Class – Wednesday 30th June 2010
Crib compiled using Charles Upton (Deeside Caledonian Society)’s MINICRIB for 2 dances and abbreviated original notes from devisers for 5 dances

This is the suggested class programme for the Harrow class on 30th June 2010

DESPERATION (R 8x32) Cliff Fryer

1- 8 SET AND ROTATE (1C & 2Cset to partner then pull right shoulder back and dance on one place clockwise, 1L to 2L’s position and 2M to 1M’s position while 1M &2L finish in partner’s place with couples facing on the side lines. 1C & 2C change places on the sides then dance on clockwise to finish with 2C in top place and 1C in 2nd place). 1M & 2L stay facing out ready for:

9-16 1C & 2C dance Right Hands Across. 1C & 3C dance Left Hands Across. 1C change direction to continue into:

17-24 Reels of 3 on the sides – 1C give right shoulder to 2C to begin. Finish in order 2, 1, 3. All three couples face in ready for:

25-32 2C, 1C & 3C dance Six Hands Round and Back Finish in the order 2, 1, 3.

1C repeat from new position

============ <rest of page snipped> ===================================================================

In the same search I found two later programmes from the same group, which both say :

9 -16 1C & 2C dance Right Hands across and LH back 17-24 1s dance Reels of 3 on the sides – 1C give right shoulder to 2C to begin.

Now we can guess what has happened: The first description “from the deviser’s notes” looks like the correct one; 1C and 3C both flow easily from the LHA into the reel, specifically stated as “right shoulder to 2nd corner”.

The other two descriptions the transition from LHA into the reels is very uncomortable for both 2C and 1C. It is not credible that Chris Flyer wrote that. Someone must have made a mistake in copying [9-16].

CONCLUSION: I have no doubt that Keith’s diagram is correct, and that the Minicrib was based on one of the erroneous copies, and so had [9-16] wrong.

David, do you agree?

Closing Note: Cliff Fryer was HDCS (Harrow and District Caledonian Society) President in 1989-90, 1990-91, 1995-96, 2003-04. This information has been added to his page as “Extra Info”.

Over to David and his team.

Thanks, Andrew, for giving me a nice bit of detective excercise. Cheers. Eric

The Minicrib team has detected that in the initial Minicrib the “1s+3s dance LH Across” had unintentionally been omitted. The Minicrib text on SCDDB has now been patched; the next Minicrib edition will have a final new text. Fixed. Eric
