Issue 1701: Link Inappropriate

Object
The Music and Dances of Bruce Fordyce (Publication)
Submitter
Iain Boyd
Assigned to
Anselm Lingnau
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

The link associated with the Online Source leads to the Leeds Branch Shop and “The Bruce Fordyce Memorial Collection” NOT this publication.

As a follow up, I thought that we had agreed that the Online Source would be used only when a dance, tune or publication was available on the internet and could be downloaded and NOT to point to where it can be purchased!

There are still a number of links pointing to the Leeds Branch Shop.

I’m working on a way for commercial purveyors of SCD materials (CDs and books) to be able to insert direct links to their product pages so they don’t need to show up in “Online sources”. Like many other things this is almost done and sitting in the queue of stuff to be finished as soon as the more pressing stuff in the queue has been cleared. In the meantime, let’s cut the system some slack; once the shop links extension is up we can clean up the “Online sources”.

Having said that, the reason why the link is like it is may well be that (a) the publication it points to contains all the dances in the publication whose page it appears on, except one, and (b) the publication whose page it appears is out of print or otherwise not available, so the “online source” actually denotes a reasonable way to get at the content of the publication if not the publication itself.

Personally I would prefer this to be more explicit, e.g., by a note in “Extra Info” and a link there. I’ve removed the link from this publication’s page and added such a note and link; as I said, the link on the other page will go away once we have the shop link extension.
